Mahamrityunjaya Mantra
Being born in India is a blessing by God I believe. Where we were raised by watching mythological TV serials like Om Namah Shivaay, Ramayan, Jai Hanuman, Shree Krishna, and a lot more. And almost every home in India has a dedicated corner for doing Puja. So, Hinduism is not only a religion, rather it is the way of life. But our own culture has faded with time. We perform prayers but somehow we have forgotten the true essence of it. I will try to re-emphasize the importance of the Mahamrityunjaya Mantra and its powerful impact on our life in this post.
What is Mahamrityunjaya Mantra?
Lord Shiva is one of the principal deities of Hinduism. There are a lot of ways to worship him as mentioned in Veda and Puran. Chanting mantra is the most powerful way to connect with the supreme being and dedicate yourself to Lord Shiva. There are many mantras and each has its own set of benefits. I am specifically writing about the Mahamrityunjaya Mantra as we all are going through immense negativity all around. This is a powerful life-restoring healing mantra also known by Rudra Mantra, Trayambak Mantra, or Sanjeevani mantra. This was given by Lord Shiva to sage Shukracharya and later it reached Shiva Puraan and 3 Vedic scriptures ie Rig Veda, Yajur Veda, and Atharv Veda.
The powerful Mahamrityunjaya mantra was given by Sage Markandeya to Sati to save the life of Moon who was once cursed by King Daksha. You can find a lot of stories from our scriptures about how it has saved the lives of many. Now days also sages adopt this mantra as part of their daily sadhana.
oṃ tryambakaṃ yajāmahe sugandhiṃ puṣṭi-vardhanam
urvārukam iva bandhanān mṛtyor mukṣīya mā ‘mṛtāt
Meaning of Mahamrityunjaya Mantra
We worship Shiva – The three-eyed Lord, who is fragrant and nourishes and grows all beings. As the ripened cucumber is liberated from its bondage to the creeper when it fully ripens, may Shiva liberate us from, for the sake of immortality.
Word by word meaning
oṃ- is a sacred/mystical syllable in Hinduism.
tryambakaṃ- the third-eyed one
yajāmahe- we worship, honor.
sugandhiṃ- sweet fragrance as the spiritual essence
puṣṭi- nourishment, wealth, perfection vardhanam– one who nourishes and strengthens
urvārukam- fruit cucumber iva- like
bandhanān- from the bondage, limitation
mṛtyor+ mukṣīya May I be free from death/fear of death
mā ‘mṛtāt free from death and birth cycle for the sake of immortality
Through this powerful mantra, we bow down to the lotus feet of Lord Shiva to free us from the untimely death or any kind of problems and help us to release from the cycle of births and deaths. A beautiful example of cucumber is given in this mantra that it leaves its bondages without any effort. Similarly, we pray to Lord Shiva to give his blessings so that we can also rise above from bondages, attachments of temporary materialism and can be united with God by attaining Nirvana.

Can I chant the mantra in my mind for someone else. Is it compulsory to recite it 108 times. Can I chant how much I can. Will it still be effective for the other person even though he is not hearing it. But he is a devotee of lord Shiva
